Why Should You Break In a Rebuilt Engine?

The process of breaking in an engine involves forcing rings and cylinder bores to conform to each other, sealing the combustion gasses within the cylinders. Unfortunately, idling the engine for a period of time will not create the pressures needed. Without serious force, piston rings may not seal properly – resulting in poor oil control and diminished engine performance overall.

 

Dangers of Not Breaking In a Rebuilt Engine

Improper or inadequate breaking in of rebuilt engines causes what is known as ‘glazing’, which prevents piston rings from ever sealing correctly. Glazing refers to how hard oil and fuel deposits collect on the cylinder walls of an engine. Once this happens, the only way to rectify the issue is to dismantle the entire engine again and break it in correctly.

Apply Make-Shift Loads

Most engine rebuilders agree that to correctly seal the piston rings, you need to focus on getting around 75% of full load on the rebuilt engine for a few hours – keeping idle time to a minimum. Ways of breaking in vehicular engines include:

  • Attach a heavy trailer, find a long steep hill, and drive up it once or twice.
  • Drive up to the speed limit as fast as you can then, while still in gear, release the throttle and let the vehicle coast to a complete stop.

 

Utilise Break-In Powders

They might be a little old-school, but many engine rebuilders still swear by them! We’re talking about break-in powders, like Caterpillar’s 7F5225 powder. Here’s how to correctly utilise a break-in powder when breaking in a rebuilt engine:

  • Reassemble and start the engine,
  • Loosen air cleaner on each bank of cylinders (leaving a gap between flange and inlet manifold),
  • Run engine at 800RPM and allow powder to be sucked slowly through gap (1.25 teaspoons per cylinder,
  • Tighten air cleaner, idle engine for 30 minutes, and it should be ready for service.

Any industrial engine mechanic can take an engine apart and put it back together, but what about reconditioning an engine to an almost ‘good as new’ level? Step 1: Engine Dismantle

The first step in our engine reconditioning process is one of the most important. This is where we carefully dismantle the industrial engine, looking at the condition of each and every engine part as it is removed. Once the engine has been stripped, each individual part is carefully stored for step two – the cleaning process.

Step 2: Cleaning Engine Parts

Once the industrial engine parts have been assessed for wear and damage, they are ready for the cleaning phase. Each part is placed in our Eagleharm Ultrasonic Cleaner which utilises Ultrasonic technology to remove oil, dirt and grime – leaving each part almost good as new. Once thoroughly cleaned, the industrial engine parts are assessed once more.

Step 3: Bearing Clearances

The next phase in the engine reconditioning process is to check bearing clearances. Here, our qualified artisans inspect the engine parts and compare them to the manufacturer’s factory specifications. Parts that are too damaged to salvage are discarded and replaced, and parts that can be saved are machined back to factory specification.

Step 4: Engine Reassembly

Once we’ve machined the salvageable parts to factory spec, and replaced the non-salvageable parts with new ones, it’s time to put the industrial engine back together again. Before this happens, each part is assessed once more to ensure they meet the manufacturer’s requirements.

Step 5: Testing the Engine

Probably the most important step in our engine reconditioning process, the final phase is to test the reconditioned engine. Here we listen carefully for any irregularities and run the engine to ensure it is functioning optimally. If nothing serious comes up, the industrial engine is ready for work once more!

How We Rebuild Engines

Before fuel injection technology, engine reconditioning specialists would perform a ‘carb to pan’ engine disassembly. This involves removing the engine from the machinery and taking it apart down to it’s individual parts, nuts and bolts. Here are the steps in the engine re-building process:

  1. Engine parts are carefully removed, assessed for damage, and stored
  2. Once the entire engine has been stripped and assessed, an ultrasonic cleaner chemically cleans each part, removing any residual oil and dirt particles
  3. After chemically cleaning each part, they are assessed once more for damage and wear
  4. Bearing clearances are then checked and compared to the manufacturer’s factory specifications. Engine parts that aren’t in accordance with factory spec are machined to either the next oversize or undersize
  5. Once the engine’s damaged parts are repaired or replaced, and the rest of the components are thoroughly checked and cleaned, the last phase is to reassemble the engine and return it to the vehicle it belongs to.
