How to Tell When Your Engine Needs Attention

An engine, regardless of size, is a complex mechanism of moving and fixed parts that work together to achieve a specific purpose. So, when one part starts to fail, the whole engine system begins to suffer – affecting overall performance. Without regular engine maintenance, poor performance is the least of all worries – the engine could seize up entirely! This article takes a look at some tell-tale signs your engine might not be as healthy as you thought. Here’s how to tell when your engine needs attention…

Power loss.

As with any internal combustion engine, the fuel provided is used to create power via a combustion cycle (4-stroke, 2-stroke). If you’re noticing a serious loss of power, this could mean that there’s an issue at one of the stages of the combustion cycle.

Strange noises.

Some might argue that engines make strange noises at the best of times but listen closely. If your engine is making knocking/ticking noises, backfiring from the exhaust pipe, hissing or spitting liquid – turn off your ignition and immediately call an engine reconditioning specialist!

Engine stalling.

Anyone who has done their drivers license test more than once probably knows exactly what a stalling engine sounds like. A stalling engine is most often caused by an issue with the initial ignition phase of the combustion cycle. Checked your spark plugs and they’re fine? Call a professional.

Strange smells.

Another sure sign of engine trouble is when strange smells start to come from your exhaust. This happens when the exhaust stroke of the combustion cycle is failing, and gives off noxious fumes that only get worse. This isn’t critical if left for a few days, but try and get a professional to take a look sooner rather than later.

Not starting.

Without a doubt, the biggest sign that your engine requires some serious attention is when you turn your key in the ignition and nothing happens. This could be your ignition, your battery, or a number of other engine issues. Not sure who to send it to? An engine repair centre can help!
